Forensic evidence tested from one of Ivan Milat's murder victims has been re-examined under new DNA technology available, and has concluded that Milat worked alone when he attacked and murdered his victims.

While two decades have passed since Milat was sentenced for the murders at the Belanglo State Forest in NSW, there remained conjecture about whether he had an accomplice.

Several factors, including the multiple beer bottles and cigarettes found near the sites, as well as hairs clutched by victim Joanne Walters when she was killed in 1992, led detectives to believe that Milat had help.

However, while initial testing of the hairs inclined the view that they belonged to a male, several strands were preserved in the event that technology progressed and they could be further tested.

Advances in technology have since allowed a more thorough examination of the hairs, with it concluded that they in fact belonged to Ms Walters, according to a report by the Daily Telegraph.

Milat was sentenced to life for the murder of the seven backpackers at Belanglo State Forest, with the crimes spanning 1989 to 1993.
