Eyeliner products have been pulled from Australian shelves after it was found they contained toxic chemicals. 

Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) inspectors have seized more than 7400 eyeliner products believed to contain lead.

Consumers are being warned to take care when purchasing cosmetics after testing, by New South Wales Health, of the eyeliners branded as “Hashmi Surma Special” and “Hashmi Kohl Aswad” revealed high levels of lead and other dangerous metals, including arsenic and mercury.

The Powered eyeliner products were in specialist Indian and Pakistani stores in Victoria, NSW, ACT, SA and Queensland from July 2017 until July this year. 

Exposure to lead can lead to acute and chronic poisoning – and symptoms are most severe in children and babies born to mothers who were exposed to lead while pregnant.

Symptoms of acute lead poisoning include muscle pain, fatigue, abdominal pain, headache, nausea/vomiting, seizures and coma.

Symptoms of chronic lead poisoning include irritability, lack of energy, loss of appetite, learning disabilities, behavioural problems, poor coordination and impaired growth. 

The products recalled are known as Hasmi Kajal, Hasmi Tube, Hasmi Surma and Hasmi Kohl Aswad.
