A British scientist has parents and experts divided about when to talk to kids about swear words.

Dr Emma Byrne, a neuroscientist and the author of “Swearing is Good For You: The Amazing Science Of Bad Language” has said she thinks children as young as two should learn swear words and their meaning.

And Monash Linguistics Professor Kate Burridge says the more mysterious they are to kids, the more power they have.

She said kids learn these words early on, so it’s more about pointing out the power of these words early on.

“You would do that with any sort of language – appropriate language is all about context. Swearing has always been an important part of Australian language.”

“It’s matter of teaching them the appropriate use of language - you can hurt people using words that aren't swear words too.”

She said that taking extreme punishments could actually give power to the words: “ The wrong thing is to sort of leap onto kids and say don’t use these words and ban them… if parents feel like they shouldn’t use these words, just talk to the kids about it.”
