Coles now say they’ll only hand out free plastic bags until August 29.

Yesterday the supermarket chain announced they would continue to hand out free heavy duty plastic bags as a way to help customers “transition” to bringing their own bags.

The backflip was met with uproar from the public and environmentalists who dubbed the decision a “backflip”.

"They talked the talk but haven't walked the walk," Greenpeace spokeswoman Zoe Dean said yesterday.

"It's interesting because the ban on single-use bags came as a result of pressure from customers and people calling for companies to take responsibility and stop using plastic bags."

In a statement the company revealed the decision to hand out reusable plastic bags has been extended for another month as customers were finding it hard to remember to bring bags:

"… we know that many customers are still finding themselves a bag or two short at the register and we want to do the right thing by them during this transition period. Putting our customers first is in our DNA and we must always be empathetic and responsive to their needs," he said.

"That's why we are extending our complimentary bag offer until Wednesday 29 August for our customers in QLD, NSW, VIC and WA. I appreciate this transition phase is taking longer than anticipated but it is absolutely the right thing to do by our customers."

Coles pledged to ban the bag on July 1, but continued to hand out reusable plastic bags.
