A gunman in southern California has killed five people, including his wife, before turning the gun on himself as a sheriff's deputy closed in.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood says the shootings began shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday at a business and a home in Bakersfield, about 145km north of Los Angeles.

Local media are reporting the man approached the trucking business and shot a man before shooting his wife. A third man who arrived at the business was also pursued and shot.

The man then went to a house, confronted two men and shot them dead. He then hijacked a car but the woman and child inside the vehicle escaped.

A sheriff's deputy then spotted the man driving and when he pulled the man over and confronted him he shot himself in the chest, local media say.

There's no immediate word on how the other victims were related.
