In breaking news, there has been an incident in Westminster, England.

Police are urgently clearing the area following reports that a car has smashed into security barriers and struck several pedestrians outside the Houses of Parliament.

According to BBC News, a man has been arrested.

The incident happened at 7.37am local time, with a major police response.

Posts have emerged on social media showing a man being arrested by officers.

Dozens of police cars were seen swarming the area in response.

There are large security barriers made of steel and concrete around the Houses of Parliament.

This was a response to the March 2017 attack, which saw a car plough into crowds on Westminster Bridge, killing four people.

At 0737hrs today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament. The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene. We will issue further info when we have it.

Surrounding streets have been cordoned off as armed police attend the scene.

It is understood that Westminster has been placed in lockdown.

At this stage, officers do not believe that anybody is in a life-threatening condition. Cordons are in place to assist the investigation. Westminster tube station is closed.
