Opposition leader Bill Shorten says Australia could have same-sex marriage passed into law by Christmas.
The Labor leader, who is in Melbourne currently, told the Hit Network’s Fifi, Fev and Byron this morning he was confident there would be a “yes” result – and a smooth ride for the bill.
He told the show, if all goes to plan parliament could be voting on the legislation in early December.
He said while it was possible the bill could get caught up – he was confident there was enough support.
“Mr Turnbull’s got some people in his party who say that if this passes it’ll impinge on religious freedom. They’re wrong.
“There’s enough votes in the parliament if the liberals have a conscience vote for this to get through. I think Australians want us to do this and just get on do everything else.”
