Thunderstorm asthma season is here – with warnings hay-fever sufferers need to be prepared.

People are being warned to guard against the condition, which killed ten Victorians in November 2016 and saw 1400 end up in hospital.

The condition occurs when a high pollen count is combined with a thunderstorm.

When the rain hits, airborne grains of pollen absorb the moisture until they burst, releasing smaller particles. These penetrate deep into the lungs, triggering asthma.

More shockingly, half of people who presented with thunderstorm asthma in Victoria had never had asthma before.

Hay fever sufferers are being urged to see their doctor for preventative measures.
