The number of Australians getting active has reached a 10-year high - and we're spending more cash to stay fit.

New data from the Medibank Better Health Index, shows 9.7 million Australians are now physically active - and almost half a million of those people have taken up exercise in the past year.

The study also shows we're splashing more cash on fitness as well - with the average annual spending hitting $504 annually.

Medibank Chief Medical Officer Dr Linda Swan said: “These findings reveal that as a nation, we’re showing signs of prioritising our physical health. However, despite these efforts, it is important to bear in mind that almost one in two Australians remain inactive, showing we still have a way to go if we’re going to combat inactivity en masse.”

So what's holding us back?

The main barrier is a lack of motivation: with 57 per cent of Australians saying that's the main reason they don't get physical.

37 per cent say the cost of exercise held them back while 31 per cent say they just don't have anyone to workout with.
