Landmark research has revealed that Australian drivers are distracted for 45 per cent of their time behind the wheel.

Hundreds of drivers were filmed inside their vehicles over a span of nearly two million kilometres, and results from the study showed that every 96 seconds, a driver was distracted by something other than driving.

Of these incidences, six per cent of these distractions resulted in a 'near miss' - with driver reactions including sudden swerving, a failure to indicate, or sharp braking.

Roughly one third of distractions held the attention of the driver for five seconds or less.

These included things such as seatbelt adjustments or pressing buttons on the dashboard.

Personal hygiene also accounted for seven per cent of tasks, while texting was at 3.5 per cent.

Texting while driving increases the risk of accidents by six times, and takes an average of 94 seconds.
