A Thai rescue diver working to rescue boys trapped in cave in northern Thailand has died from lack of oxygen, authorities say.

The Guardian reports the incident occurred at 1am local time. It's believed Saman Anan, a former Thai Navy Seal died when he ran out of oxygen while placing air tanks at stages throughout the cave. He was working as a volunteer at the time. 

Anan's body has been sent to the airport to be flown home to his family.
