An early morning blaze has hit close to home for Port Macquarie Fire and Rescue crews, as fire has torn through a cottage at the service’s old base.

Two dozen personnel battling the inferno around 3:00am, amid fears it may have spread to other structures at the former headquarters on Hay Street.

Hazmat were also on scene as firies had to be decontaminated, with asbestos lining the destroyed accommodation building.

Police are checking out the cause of the suspicious blaze.
