No word yet on what is the exact cause behind an inferno at Port Macquarie's abandoned Food for Less building.

Fire and Rescue - backed up by Hazmat - entered the smoked out former grocery store around 2:00pm yesterday, the ash so thick they struggled to locate the site of the fire.

Two mattresses were found burning in the centre of the building and were destroyed by the flames.

It's believed squatters were living at the site.

Around 14 firies had to navigate smashed glass and other dangerous obstacles reportedly caused by vandalism to put it out.

Woolworths - which owns the property - has been approached for comment.

It’s understood a contractor has since boarded up the premises.
