Port Macquarie's All Ages Relay team celebrate their Gold today.

Port Macquarie’s Surf Lifesaving Club has just missed out on a podium position at this year’s Stramit Country Championships in South West Rocks, but still had plenty of reasons to smile as local teams brought home plenty of gold.

The Flynn’s beach-based club headed into day two of the championshps in fifth position, and slightly improved their standings today to finish fourth with first-placings in several events including the All Ages Relay today. The club’s Paula Stone was among the athletes that impressed in the individual competitions, taking out Gold in the 30-39 Female Single Ski and Ironwoman events.

Kempsey-Crescent Head also had a fruitful 2017 campaign, winning gold in team events including the 180 years Male Surf Boat, 120 years Female Surf Boat and Open Male Surf Boat divisions. Wauchope Bonny-Hills was the other Mid North Coast Surf Lifesaving Club to finish in the top ten.

Host club South West Rocks SLSC hasn’t gone home empty-handed, winning Gold medals in both the 120  and 160 years Male Surf Boat events, while Mark Knotley won silver in the 50-59 Men’s 2km beach run.

Arguably more important for the host side than silverware is the impact away from the beach: today South West Rocks Club President Rod McDonagh said attendance numbers were up on last year’s, living up to pre-event expectations that 4000 people would descend on the Macleay Valley town this weekend.

“The competitive numbers were up a little bit from last year, great crowds and great support from the local community,” Mr McDonagh said.

“All indications suggest there were 1600 competitors plus all the supproters and team managers, so we expect four or five thousand people came here. It was certainly very busy in town… we have done some figures on it previously and it usually injects about $3 million into the local economy.”
