Cowper MP, Luke Hartsuyker says a shakeup for university funding won’t have a bad impact on local students.

The Nationals Member has welcomed a suite of reforms for tertiary educators, set to axe $2.8 billion from the sector.

Among the changes, graduates will pay back their HECS debt once they’re earning $42,000 a year – down from $55,000 – while degrees may cost up to $3,600 more.

But Mr Hartsuyker notes with scholarship scheme for rural and regional students on the way, plus increased support for diplomas and associate degrees Mid North Coast pupils won’t feel it too hard.

Meantime protestors have descended on the Cowper MP’s electorate office today, raising their voice against the contentious Carmichael Coal Mine.

They’re urging Luke Hartsuyker to come out against the Queensland mine proceeding, saying it’ll have serious ramifications on climate change.

It comes as to the south of his electorate, environmental activists met up in Port Macquarie last month to launch their own campaign against Adani's project.
