Melbourne's 493 trams are going 100% green.
We don't mean painted green like the 90's, but two new solar power plants are being built to run the entire network on renewable energy.
Contracts have been awarded to Bannerton Solar Park, near Robinvale, for a 100 megawatt solar power farm. A second facility is also being built at Numurkah, to generate an extra 38 megawatts for the network.
"Those solar plants are ready to start construction. We anticipate both will be fully operational by the middle of next year" says Victorian Energy minister Lily D'Ambrosio, "producing clean energy, employing hundreds of people, and investing many millions of dollars right here in this state".
The Victorian Government also plans to enshrine in law our renewable energy target at 25 per cent by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2025.
