Werribee is officially the welfare cheat capital of Australia – and the government is cracking down.
Fraud investigators have been sent to Centrelink branches in Werribee and Sunshine to investigate those flagged for suspicious activity.
There will also be officers at Pacific Werribee shopping centre to collect tip-offs from the public.
In 2015 2,600 people in Werribee were identified who had collected almost $11 million in illegal benefits between them.
Almost half of adults in Werribee are receiving some kind of income support.
In a statement, Federal Minister for Human Services Michael Keenan said the crackdown was not about catching people who make genuine errors, but rather those who deliberately set out to commit welfare fraud.
"Where there is evidence of criminal behaviour, matters are referred to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions for potential prosecution and big fines or jail terms can apply," the minister said.
