Uber is increasing fares across Melbourne in order to tackle issues of pay and conditions among its workforce of drivers.

As of today, Melbourne UberX passengers will pay $1.15 per kilometre, up from $1, alongside 35 cents per minute, which is up from 32 cents, The Age reports.

Uber will continue to collect 20 to 25 per cent of the fare, while the booking fee of 55 cents and base fare of $2 will not change.

The changes will also affect UberXL and Select rides and will be rolled out in other Victorian cities, which Uber Victorian general manager Lucas Groeneveld says are in response to driver feedback around employment conditions.

"With this in mind, we’re making changes to better reflect the time and effort involved in getting riders where they need to go," he said.

The Fair Work Ombudsman is currently investigating whether Uber has breached Australia workplace laws by employers their drivers as self-employed contractors rather than employees.
