Three people have been arrested over a crash in Melbourne's north where a passenger was left for dead in the wreckage of a car.
The man was still alive but trapped in the back of a crashed Subaru found by a passer-by on Bindts Road in Wollert on Friday, but died soon after paramedics arrived.
A 33-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman have on Sunday been placed under police guard in hospital, while a 26-year-old Epping man is assisting investigators with their inquiries, police say.
The arrests come after police made a public appeal for witnesses on Friday and slammed those who ran away from the crash.
"They didn't call for the ambulance, they didn't let the emergency services know, they didn't let police know," Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor told reporters.
"I can't understand how a person can just walk away from their mate when they're dying, they're literally dying in front of them.
Police have previously said the man could have survived if he had received help sooner.
"If we had of got to him, he may be alive today," Det Insp McGregor said.
