The Labor government has revealed the worst Melbourne suburbs for leaving kids in hot cars in a bid to encourage parents to be mindful in hot weather.
In the year to August, Ambulance Victoria responded to 1696 callouts across Victoria for children left in cars – the majority of which were toddlers and babies.
Parents are reminded how easy it is to underestimate the time it takes to run a quick errand.
On average four kids a day are put at risk of serious injury or death by being left unattended in vehicles. A car’s temperature can double in minutes, meaning the head inside a parked car can be 20-30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature.
Children’s bodies are more susceptible to heat and can rise in temperature a lot faster – meaning they are at greater risk of heatstroke, dehydration and organ damage when left in the car.
The top 10 postcodes for callouts are:

Frankston South (34)
Roxburgh Park (33)
