A factory in Melbourne's west has caught on fire, with thick dark smoke covering the Melbourne Skyline.

The fire began at the 100m by 200m Tottenham building around 5am on Thursday, with 20 trucks and 80 firefighters at the scene, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said. 

Crews were called to the scene just after 5am this morning. A spokesman said there had been a series of minor explosions inside the factory and the owner was on the way the scene.

The fire is understood to be at the former site of Highland Pallets, which is no longer based at the factory. 

There is a large amount of toxic smoke which may impact the area within a 2km radius of Somerville Road. A community advice warning has been issued for the following suburbs: Brooklyn, Kingsville, Tottenham, West Footscray, Altona North, Braybrook, Footscray, South Kingsville, Spotswood, Sunshine, and Yarraville.

If you are sensitive to smoke or you live with someone who is sensitive to smoke you should close windows and doors. Turn off heating and cooling systems.

MFB is urging community members to avoid the area, and keep the roads clear so that emergency services can respond.
