Melbourne is set to get car-free 'superblocks' to help ease congestion in the CBD and increase safety.

The plan would see several streets car-free following the Bourke Street rampage last year and fears of overcrowding.

This would see cars and public transport confined to the perimeter of the zone, which is bordered by Bourke, Elizabeth, Flinders and William streets.

Inside this square would be areas just for pedestrians and cyclists.

Emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles and residential access would be maintained, but the speed limit would be reduced to 10km/hour.

Council plans regarding the plan will be released today according to Nine News.
