A lost out-of-town motorist has been charged after accidentally driving through Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall this afternoon.

Victoria Police told the Hit Network that a 50-year-old driver from Albury was intercepted at about 2pm today after he took a wrong turn and ended up in the pedestrian-only section of the strip.

Officers say the early-model Holden Commodore was stopped halfway between Swanston and Elizabeth streets, which managed to dodge recently-installed bollards.

While there was nothing suspicious or malicious about the incident, the man will be charged on summons for traffic offences.

Back in January, six people lost their lives when a car when a vehicle was allegedly driven by Dimitrious Gargasoulas through Bourke Street Mall.
