Police have released a photo of a hit-and-run driver who killed a cardiac nurse in Melbourne on Monday night.

Lynda Hansen after a stolen Lexus crashed into her car at Oakleigh, with the driver of the stolen car fleeing while nearby residents performed CPR on the nurse.

Witnesses to the crash are being urged to come forward to help identify the driver, who is described as 181cm tall, with a solid build, aged in his 20s to 30s and with short dark thick hair.

He was wearing long shorts, runners and a dark T-shirt.

Ms Hansen's family said the beloved 53-year-old was a "very caring and family orientated" person.

"Lynda leaves behind many shocked and devastated friends and family members," the family said in a statement on Tuesday.

"She enjoyed overseas travel and loved to help people, especially her elderly mother."

The compassionate woman was dedicated to her spiritual life, enjoyed yoga and sang in a gospel choir, her family said.
