Police officers in Victoria have posed undercover as wind washers in order to catch-out distracted drivers.

In photos that have since surfaced online, police officers can been seen in hi-vis workwear, carrying cleaning equipment in Forest Hill.

It is illegal to wash windscreens at intersections, and police have since clarified that no windows were actually washed during the operation.

Instead, it appeared as though officers were using their roadside position to call in any drivers who were using mobile phones.

Some 38 infringement notices were issued as a result of the exercise.

Forest Hill police officers conducted a traffic operation in Nunawading yesterday targeting distracted drivers. Part of the operation involved covert observations of drivers in stationary vehicles. Police issued 38 infringement notices to drivers for using their mobile phone while driving.
