A world first breakthrough Australian medical research in could saves thousands of lives.
The research team at Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute has found a key ingredient in Vegemite could prevent miscarriages and birth defects.
The study found pregnant women have a low level of niacin, known as Vitamin B3, which is found in meats, green vegetables and vegemite. Boosting the levels of this nutrient reduced miscarriages and heart, spinal, kidney and cleft palate problems in newborn babies.
Even women taking supplements were found to have deficiencies in the vitamin.
The findings have been released today by the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, it's said they are one of the greatest to ever come out of Australian medical research.
