Here’s a piece of history for you – the Queen Victoria Market site was actually built above Melbourne’s first cemetery. The last burial was in 1917 and in 1920, 914 bodies with marked graves were moved to other locations.

Under proposed plans by Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Gary Morgan, 9000 bodies will be removed to make way for an underground carpark at the famous market.

Mr Morgan described leaving the bodies underneath the main carpark on site as ‘stupid’ and believes funds will be saved by removing the bodies rather than working around them.

Mr Morgan has run for Lord Mayor three times in the past, losing to Robert Doyle who has since left office.
