Rain will fall across Melbourne over the next two days but don’t expect it to cool down.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Stephen King said rain would begin this morning and continue with thunderstorms hitting this afternoon and into the night.

He predicted around 50mm will fall.

"We've got one band of rain coming down from the north now, we've seen up to 20 millimetres come out of that over the ranges in the north, and Melbourne will see five to 10 millimetres in the next hour or two.

"There will be a reasonable break for the rest of morning and then showers re-developing in the afternoon, with possible thunderstorms this afternoon and into tonight."

At 1.30am on Monday in Melbourne it was still 22 degrees, with the overnight minimum recorded at 19.7 degrees. Mr King said that was higher than average but not a record.

The bad news is the rain will not bring any cool relief until Tuesday.
