A koala has been found dead with its ears cut off in a horrifying case of animal cruelty at Warrnambool.
An SES worker on Hopkins Point Road, about 2km east of Hopkins Bridge, made the grisly discovery at 8:30am on Monday.
Investigators believe the mutilation happened recently and are searching for any cars or people seen near the scene around that time.
It's unclear whether the marsupial was dead at the time.
Police have been told it follows a spate of similar mutilations involving kangaroos and wallabies.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
