A student from every Melbourne high school will be offered a $5000 scholarship to the University of Melbourne to try and increase the University’s diversity.
The Melbourne Principals Scholarship will be awarded every year to students from 580 schools in Melbourne who have been selected by their principals for academic and cultural success, The Age reports.
The students will receive $5000 towards their cost of studying and other living expenses while their course fees will still incur a HECS debt which they’ll need to repay.
The new scholarships are aimed at increasing diversity and aim to look “beyond high ATARs”.
However, new scholarships for asylum seekers, indigenous students and interstate students will be focused towards those with an ATAR of 99 or above.
