A crane is in danger of collapsing at an inner Melbourne suburb building site after its arm was bent backwards during damaging winds.

About 300 people were evacuated in Lennox Street, Richmond about 11pm on Monday, when heavy winds damaged the 40-metre structure.

Work to stabilise the crane was delayed until first light, with emergency crews at the scene and traffic on Lennox Street closed from Highett Street to Swan Street in Cremorne.
