The Queensland government has given the green light for mining giant Glencore to build the first stage of a mine north east of Roma.

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham has granted Glencore three 27-year leases covering 30,000 hectares for the first stage of its $7 billion Wandoan mine near Roma.

Glencore is looking to pull over 22 million tonne of thermal coal from the area.

It will be the first major coal project in the Surat Basin and is expected to create up to 1,300 new jobs
