More than one thousand birthing kits will be sent to third world countries thanks to Roma's Zonta club.

The Roma Zonta Club and volunteers are putting together birthing kits as part of an International Project with Qantas flying the kits to the third world countries for free.

Volunteers from across the community are putting the kits together that include gauze, string, a scalpel, soap, gloves and a piece of black plastic.

Club President Wendy Jensen says that while it's only a few simple items the 1000 kits will help to save around 600 lives.

The club has been involved in the program for over 10 years and Mrs Jensen says over that period they've reduced the infant death rate by 60 percent.
