DESIGN of a new fishing pier at Hospital Bridge is almost complete. The old pier was damaged in Cyclone Debbie about 18 months ago and has been closed to the public since. Cr Kevin Casey said the new structure had been designed to be more resistant to flooding and severe weather events. “The insurance claim for the Hospital Bridge pier was finalised in June and council employed consultant GHD to carry out the investigations and detailed design for the new structure, which is nearly complete,” he said. “A 15 metre by 15-metre L-shape design has been used to increase the structural integrity of the pier in future flood events while maintaining useable fishing area. “It has also been designed with disability access in mind and Mackay Recreational Fishers Alliance was consulted to provide comments on the design. “We are looking forward to seeing local anglers dropping a line at the popular fishing spot again sometime next year.” The project will be tendered for construction later this year and work is expected to start in May next year once the tender is awarded.
