Cyclone Debbie’s forecast to cross the coast between Rollingstone and Proserpine tomorrow morning. It's currently a category 2 system but is forecast to intensify to Category 4. The Whitsundays and surrounding coastal islands likely to be among the first areas to be impacted A Storm Tide Watch and Act message has been issued for Dingo Beach, Conway Beach, Cape Upstart, Bowen, Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour from the Whitsunday Disaster Management Group. Evacuations are directed in the Whitsunday Region with locals in area from Cape Upstart to Proserpine encouraged to leave. Chair of the Whitsunday Disaster Management Group and Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox says if you're unable to evacuate the cyclone Shelters in Bowen and Proserpine will be opened today as a last resort.

The storm is also causing flights cancellations. Virgin Australia announcing all flights in and out of Mackay, Hamilton Island and Proserpine are cancelled. Jetsar and Tigarair have also cancelled a few.

Many public and private schools and daycare centres are closed around the region from Airlie Beach up to Townsville. The early decision made to close them for today -- coming to allow families to make plans for their children and to avoid travelling on the roads as winds pick up Catholic Education Director Ross Horner says they added schools as more information came in.
