Parents of Eungella State Primary School students are worried about the large bat colonies roosting near the school. They're taking steps to assure their children’s safety with the P and C deciding to test the water at the school on Friday. While the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection says the bat population at Eungella has more than doubled in less than a week.

A Mackay mum is thanking her lucky star's she's alive after lightning struck a tree that was just meters away from her. Shane Magnay was visiting her son in Brisbane when the gum tree next to her exploded on Tuesday.

Stage one of the Mackay Ring Road project is set to start midway through the year. The Federal government coughing up close to $400M for it. Dawson MP George Christensen says it's great news

Construction is set to commence on a new rail depot for Proserpine soon. It's part of almost $2M worth of new Queensland Rail infrastructure going in around the Whitsunday region. Assistant Minister for Transport Glenn Butcher says it'll create new jobs.

We could see a world class Skate Park go in in Mackay on Norris Road. The early designs have been released and include a semi-enclosed bowl and multifunctional infrastructure. The projects still in need of federal funding and there'll be more community consultation in April.

The popular Silver Bird Chinese restaurant on Wood Street in Mackay is closing after 24 years. The owners say they want more time with family and the last night's tonight.

LOCAL SPORT

27 Mackay and Central Highlands Karate Students could soon be off to Ireland. They're been selected to trial for the JKA Australia national team. It's following their stellar showing at the trials in Melbourne at the weekend.

Mackay's barefoot Skier Ashleigh Stebbeings is breaking records. The 24 year old jumping 23.4 meters at the State Champs last month to break the female world record by one point five meters.
