Visit the Riddoch Art Gallery for the opening of two new exhibitions Seeing Voices and Pine Tree Quilters on Friday 27 July 2018 at 6:00pm. Both exhibitions will be on display until Sunday 16 September 2018 and entry is free.

The Seeing Voices exhibition is collaboration between National Exhibition Touring Support (NETS) and Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) and explores how the voice is visualised, employed and reimagined in contemporary art.

The exhibition includes works from the Monash University Collection and loans from Australian and international artists in various forms including drawing, photography, painting, sculpture and print creating a textured and layered environment of sound, scale, moving imagery and shape.

Seeing Voices points out just how much we use our voices to become a part of, or apart from our communities. I’m excited that this fantastic collection of works has been brought to our doorstep as the exhibition relates directly to who we are and how we express ourselves. - City of Mount Gambier Arts and Culture Development Officer Serena Wong

Featured artists include Alex Martinis Roe, Alicia Frankovich, Angelica Mesiti, Bryan Phillips, Catherine or Kate, Clinton Nain, Damiano Bertoli, Erik Bünger, Fayen d’Evie, Léuli Eshraghi, Michael Cook, Rose Nolan and Susan Hiller.

Curated by Hannah Mathews, Helen Hughes and Frances E Parker Seeing Voices was developed to foster greater regional engagement with MUMA’s collection and to show the collection further afield than the University campuses.

Riddoch Art Gallery Director Dr Melentie Pandilovski will conduct a free Director’s Tour at the Gallery on Thursday 2 August 2018 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm for those interested in a more in-depth explanation of the works on display and their artists.

Pine Tree Quilters is a locally-based community group that was established more than 33 years ago. The group encourages the art of quilting in various forms and their exhibition showcases many years of patchwork experience. The display includes a wide range of traditional patchwork including quilts and other creative creations such as character bags and colourful footstools.

“I have learnt so much about quilting from working with the Pine Tree Quilters and helping them put together this exhibition. From bright colours to colourful characters, many of these quilts are made for loved ones and it’s easy to see why when so much care and effort goes into them. This exhibition is perfect for our winter months,” Ms Wong said.

Throughout August the Riddoch Art Gallery and Main Corner Complex will showcase the talents of local creatives through hosting demonstrations and mini-residencies as part of the South Australian Living Artist Festival (SALA). The program is titled Local and Live. Keep an eye on the Riddoch Art Gallery facebook page for more information as it becomes available.
