A meeting held yesterday in Mount Gambier with representatives of Rex Airlines to discuss flight services in and out of Mount Gambier is being hailed as a success.

The meeting, which was held at Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin’s Mount Gambier office and Chaired by Mr Pasin, was attended by stakeholders from the region including;

  • Mayor Richard Sage, Grant District Council
  • Mr David Singe, Chief Executive Officer District Council Grant
  • Mr Troy Bell MP, Member for Mount Gambier
  • Mayor Peter Gandolfi, Wattle Range Council/Chair Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast Inc
  • Ms Maree Thompson, Mount Gambier Hospital Health Advisory Council
  • Mrs Lynette Martin, President Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce
  • Mr Ben Hood, Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce
  • Mr Ockert LeRoux Deputy Chair, Tourism Mount Gambier
  • Mr Ian Fritsch, Mount Gambier Airport Management
  • Mr Nick Serle, General Manager City Infrastructure City of Mount Gambier
  • Mr Ben Gower, Chief Executive Officer Wattle Range Council
  • Ms Erika Vickery, President Limestone Coast Local Government Association

Mr Pasin said the meeting was a constructive discussion that outlined a pathway to lower airfares.

“I’m confident that the solution proposed today will lower the cost of flights and potentially lead to the reinstatement of services. The meeting could not have gone ahead without the cooperative approach from all parties. It was extremely beneficial to get all relevant stakeholders together in one room to discuss the issues and how we can come together to address them,” Mr Pasin said.

The solution being proposed is a partnership approach offering ‘Community Fares’ to the Limestone Coast community similar to community fares offered by REX at other regional centres across the country. The partnership will require an agreement between the District Council of Grant and REX which if agreed will result in lower fares and indeed it would mean that last minute fares are the cheapest rather than the most expensive fares on offer.

Increased passenger numbers taking advantage of the lower costs could then flow on to a reinstatement of services.

Mayor Sage, of the District Council of Grant agreed at the meeting that he would present this proposal to members of the District Council of Grant at their upcoming council meeting.

Mr Pasin thanked all that attended the meeting.

“This could be a game changer for air travel in and out of Mount Gambier, delivering the lower cost fares that the community has been campaigning for over a very long time,” Mr Pasin said.
