South East police together with SAPOL have begun Operation Belt up across the region. A 31 day operation where officers will focus on the use of seatbelts on regional roads.

Local motorists can expect local police to be hot on anyone failing to wear a seatbelt with a hefty fine of $347 and a $60 victims of crime levy for drivers failing to wear a seatbelt properly adjusted and fastened.

Inspector David Paparella of SAPOLs traffic support Branch says police on average catch around 100 people failing to comply with seatbelt rules every week on country roads.

Mount Gambier Sergeant Andrew Stott says, if a fine is what it takes to make local drivers slow down then that's what they'll get.
