19 year old woman dies in crash

Sad news coming in from the Glenaroua region yesterday evening, with a 19-year-old woman losing her life after crashing into a tree.

It is understood the young teen was traveling Broadford Glenaroua Road at around 5:10pm when her car lost traction on a bend and veered into a tree.

Emergency services doing all they could upon arrival; unfortunately seeing her pass away at the scene.

The second occupant of the vehicle a 16-year-old boy from Glenaroua was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Benalla police looking for information after a vehicle that was stopped on the Midland Highway Sped off on uniformed personnel.

Going down at around 2:30am this morning, a quick check of the vehicle number plate 1GR 1KH --- found it to be stolen from the Tullamarine area.

Officers believe The Silver VF Holden Commodore has been involved in a number of crimes locally --- now calling on the public to help track it down.

A temporary Bluetongue Virus zone - set up around Echuca back in October will be lifted.

Vet officers spent 30 days assessing the spread of the insect-born disease - given a small number of cattle in Lockington had past exposure to the virus.

Victoria's Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Charles Milne says there's no evidence of the virus circulating within the zone, or the insect that spreads it.

La Trobe University student Marianne Haines is off to Canada next year to undertake postgraduate studies.

The Wahring local's one of 18 national recipients of a John Monash Scholarship after she demonstrated why continuing studying the field of Microbiology will be beneficial for the future of Australia.

She says the University of Calgary does a lot of research on a project close to heart - algal biofuels.
