With the big race day looming, the Australian Red Cross Service is urging donors to roll up their sleeves and donate blood.
The Shepparton Blood Donor Centre has nearly 40 vacant appointments needing to be filled between Friday, November 2 and Tuesday, November 6.
Blood Service spokesperson, Shae Smith said while most people love to place a bet on the raceday, the odds of someone needing blood in their lifetime were high.
“One in three Australians will need blood or a blood product in their lifetime, yet only one in 30 donates,” Ms Smith said.
“The Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation, but it shouldn’t be the race that stops blood donation,” she said.
“We’re asking people to continue donating over the Melbourne Cup long weekend to ensure the supply of this life-saving gift.”
The platelet component of blood only has a shelf-life of five days and The Blood Service is concerned they could run low by the time the last race is run on Tuesday.
Shepparton Donor Centre is located at 210 Corio St, Shepparton (entrance via Vaughan St) and is open…
