Thieves Risk Lives To Steal Copper Cables From High Voltage Power Poles

A thief is risking their own life by stripping electrical equipment from power poles across the Gold Coast.

Copper wires have been torn from around 100 poles in Burleigh, Southport and further north in Caboolture recently.

Energex spokesperson Danny Donald believed the same offender was behind all of the thefts, and said they were taking a massive risk for just a few dollars worth of copper.

"It's something that could seriously maim them or actually take their life very quickly because they are taking these off networks that range up to 33,000 volts," he said.

The thieves are also putting the community in danger, with the cables in place to safely redirect lightning during a storm.

Energex products are clearly identifiable, and the company said scrapyard owners would be on the lookout for anyone attempting to flog the copper wires.

Anyone who spots the illegal activity was being urged to report it straight to the police.
