The old China House restaurant in Surfers Paradise has sustained serious internal smoke, water and fire damage after a blaze broke out inside the building last night.
Four fire crews raced to the structure at the corner of Elkhorn Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard around 8:05 on Tuesday.
They had the flames out within an hour and confirmed there was no one inside the building.
The abandoned restaurant is known to have housed squatters in the past although at this stage the cause of the fire isn't known.
Fire investigators were due to head to the scene on Wednesday morning.
It is believed the blaze also caused some disruptions to the light rail with buses replacing trams for a couple of hours.
