A state government review has led to the licenses for Yallourn and Loy Yang mines being extended.
Energy Australia’s operating license for Yallourn will now extend to 2051, while AGL’s licence at Loy Yang extends to 2065. Neither extension allows for coal mining beyond the closure dates already in place.
In another term of the extension, power station operators will now have to give at least 5 years warning prior to closing down to avoid a similar closure to Hazelwood, where only 6 months notice was given to prepare.
