The Hazelwood Health Study has released new research into the effects of the 2014 Hazelwood Mine Fire on a specialist school in the area, which had to relocate during the 6-week period.
The research found students and staff suffered increased anxiety and stress levels. Students experienced a reduced sense of safety, resulting in a drop in attendance and work completion; while teachers had reduced access to teaching resources and spent more time dealing with behavioral issues.
Researchers highlighted the importance of specialist schools having a backup teaching site in case another disaster causes the need for relocation in future.
The Hazelwood Mine Fire affected thousands of residents in nearby towns and burned for 45 days.
