The Australian Electoral Commission is proposing to rename the federal electorate of McMillan to Monash as part of changes to local boundaries.
Gippslanders have been campaigning for several years to remove Angus McMillan’s name from the electorate over his connection to the Aboriginal massacres in the 1840s and 1850s. The Monash electorate will be named after World War 1 General Sir John Monash.
The boundaries have also been altered. Yallourn North will switch over to the Gippsland electorate, while Newborough will join the new Monash electorate. Also as a result of the changes, Pakenham will no longer be included in the Monash electorate.
