School principals in the Moe/Newborough area have expressed their concern over a proposal by Moe Racing Club to declare a half-day public holiday for this year's Moe Cup Day.
The principals are worried that having two half-day holidays, two weeks apart, will adversely affect student numbers at schools.
The public holiday, which normally falls on a Thursday in October, was re-introduced last year after heavy rain led to the cancellation of the event in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
Local traders in the area are hoping the public holiday remains in place, as the 3-hour Moe Cup Day Sale in Moe is the biggest sale of the year in the area.
