Latrobe City Council has rejected a proposal for asbestos to be disposed of at the former Morwell Power Station site.

Council officers had recommended approving the permit heading into last night's meeting, however an alternative motion from Cr Graeme Middlemiss meant that the Council went against initial plans.

The asbestos storage cell was rejected on the basis that it didn't comply with parts of the Latrobe City planning scheme, house and settlement strategy, and earth and energy resources strategy.

Energy Brix may now appeal the ruling to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) or begin removing 300 to 500 truckloads of asbestos from the power station to a location in Melbourne.
