The Environment Protection Authority has approved Engie’s application to discharge additional water from Hazelwood Pondage.

The EPA will be allowing up to 300 megalitres per day to be released for a maximum of 60 days, with the aim of releasing pressure on the pondage dam wall.

Recent studies have shown that an earthquake over a magnitude 6 may cause the wall to break and flood nearby properties.

The usual rate of water discharge is 75 megalitres per day.
