The new Aquarium is open this school holidays

It took six years between inception and construction, but the Cairns Aquarium is finally open to the public.

Annual pass holders got a sneak preview yesterday, around 2 thousand people came along.

CEO and Founder Daniel Leipnik says it was a long time coming.

"It's very euphoric and surreal and just absolutely heartfelt to be finally open", he said.

"We had a vision and a dream; a lot of companies have really pulled together to make this happen."

Guests can walk through tanks to look at stingrays, fish and sharks. There's even a touch tank where you can pick up starfish.

But Mr Leipnik says what really sets the Cairns Aquarium apart is they don't just focus on marine wildlife.

"People essentially see Daintree Rainforest creatures, mangrove creatures, biodiversity from the Gulf Savannah, the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea," he said.

700 thousand people are expected to visit the attraction in the next year.
